Thailand’s iconic silk brand marks three-quarters of a century with a contemporary collection reimagining its traditional artisan heritage

For three-quarters of a century, the name Jim Thompson has been synonymous with exquisite Thai silk and refined living. Now, as the iconic brand celebrates its 75th anniversary, a remarkable new collection emerges; one that honours the past whilst embracing contemporary design sensibilities. In collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the “Jim Thompson 75th Anniversary” collection offers discerning travellers an opportunity to take home a piece of Thailand’s living heritage.

    A Legacy Beyond Silk

Founded in 1951 by American architect and entrepreneur James H.W. Thompson, the brand began as a passionate mission to revive Thailand’s struggling silk industry. Thompson, an art collector and socialite whose mysterious disappearance in 1967 remains one of Southeast Asia’s most captivating unsolved enigmas, transformed traditional Thai silk into a globally coveted lifestyle brand.

“For the past 75 years, Jim Thompson has evolved beyond a globally recognised Thai silk brand into a lifestyle brand spanning fashion, home furnishings, and hospitality, while continuing to celebrate Thai art, culture, craftsmanship, and local wisdom through contemporary design,” explains Nunnapat Verojanavat, Marketing Director of Jim Thompson.

    Endless Journey, Timeless Vision

The anniversary collection draws inspiration from the brand’s symbolic birthplace at Saen Saep Canal, behind the historic Jim Thompson House Museum and opposite the Baan Krua weaving community. This waterway serves as both literal and metaphorical starting point for a narrative that flows through Thailand’s diverse regions, connecting craftsmanship with cultural storytelling.

At the collection’s heart lies “CELEBRATION OF SILK,” a stunning motif that revisits Jim Thompson’s iconic textile archives through modern patchwork composition. Like fragments of a journey carefully woven together, the design incorporates Northern Lanna florals, Isan mudmee silk, and Southern Thai batik influences. Flowing lines reminiscent of water unite these elements, embodying the concept of discovering Thailand through textile patterns whilst echoing the canal as the symbolic origin of the brand’s 75-year odyssey.

    Meaningful Travel Connections

The collaboration with TAT reflects a shared philosophy: that authentic travel transcends mere sightseeing. “We aim to encourage travellers to connect more deeply with Thai culture, communities, craftsmanship, and local lifestyles,” notes Nat Kruthasoot, Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business at TAT. “This collaboration with Jim Thompson truly embodies the ‘Healing is the New Luxury’ concept, presenting experiences that connect people with the legacy, artistry, and spirit of Thailand.”

For visitors to Bangkok, Jim Thompson destinations – including the House Museum, Flagship Store, and Heritage Quarter – serve as cultural touchpoints where one can experience the story of Thai silk through art, design, and even artisanal cuisine.

    Contemporary Pieces, Cultural Soul

The collection itself balances heritage with modern sensibility. Silk Twill Scarves in 47-inch and 33-inch sizes showcase vibrant colour palettes and signature patterns, whilst a flowing 100% silk Kaftan embodies effortless elegance and comfort. The Capri Bag and Travel Clutch reinterpret Thai charm through vivid colours and timeless silhouettes – compact yet spacious, lightweight yet durable, perfect companions for seaside escapes or exclusive resort getaways.

Adding a delightfully playful element is the Elephant Doll, a printed silk creation symbolising luck and wisdom. Reimagined with contemporary flair, this collectible celebrates Thai artistry through joyful textile patterns and meticulous craftsmanship.

    The Perfect Souvenir

For travellers seeking meaningful mementoes of their Thai journey, Jim Thompson pieces offer far more than mere souvenirs. Each item carries the weight of cultural heritage, the touch of artisan hands, and the story of a brand that helped preserve an ancient craft for the modern world. From vibrant scarves and elegant bags to flowing kaftans, Jim Thompson presents hundreds of exquisitely crafted, travel-friendly treasures for discerning gift-givers.
